How graders inspect box corners

Each Funko Pop box has 8 corners (4 front, 4 back). Graders inspect each one individually under raking light — the same overhead-side light that makes whitening pop out. They're looking for three things: whitening (paper fibers compressed and stripped of color), crush (actual deformation), and creases (folded paperboard).
PSA and Beckett weigh corners heaviest. A single visible-from-6-inches whitened corner drops the Corners subgrade from 10 to 9. A real crush caps Corners at 8 even if every other corner is perfect.

Severity scale for corner damage

Faint whitening (loss of color, no fiber lift) — drops Corners to 9.5, drops overall to 9.5
Clear whitening visible at 6 inches — Corners 9, overall caps at 9
Fiber lift / minor crush — Corners 8.5, overall caps at 8.5
Hard crush, dent, or fold — Corners 7-8, overall caps at 8
Crease through the corner — Corners 6 or below, overall typically 7

Can corner damage be fixed before submitting?

Mostly no. Soft whitening can sometimes be improved with a tiny amount of moisture and pressure to re-puff the paper, but it's risky and grading houses can usually tell. The honest answer: corner damage is what it is. Pre-grade first, decide second — if a Pop has even one bad corner, the math usually points to selling raw rather than submitting.
FAQ · funko pop corner damage grading

Asked & answered.

How much does one corner ding lower a Funko Pop grade?
Half a point for faint whitening (drops 10 to 9.5). One full point for clearly visible whitening from 6 inches away. Two points or more for a real crush or fold. Multiple corner defects compound, but no single corner deduction is reversed by perfect corners elsewhere.
What's the difference between corner whitening and crease grading?
Whitening is just compressed paper that's lost color — fibers are intact. A crease is folded paperboard with permanent damage to fibers. Whitening is a 0.5-1 point deduction; a crease is a 2-3 point deduction.
Can I improve corner whitening before grading?
Mild whitening can sometimes be reduced with careful application of moisture and pressure, but it's risky and most graders can detect attempted restoration. Submitting a restored Pop without disclosure can fail authentication. Honest answer: don't try it — pre-grade and decide.
Is Popinspect an official grader?
No. We are pre-grade intelligence — we predict what PSA, CGC, or Beckett are likely to grade your Pop. The official grade still comes from them. We just make sure you only ship the ones worth shipping.
