DEFECT · SHELF WEAR
Funko Pop shelf wear grading.
Shelf wear is the cumulative damage from a Pop sitting in a retail store for months. It's the most common reason a 'new' Pop comes back graded 8.5 instead of 10.
The five sub-types of shelf wear
Edge whitening — most common. Drop Edges by 0.5-1.
Top dust shadow — discoloration from sitting under a fluorescent. Drop Surface by 0.5.
Price-sticker residue — left behind from retail tags. Drop Surface by 1-2 depending on extent.
Color fade — sun fade on red / blue boxes. Caps the grade at 9 if visible.
Customer-handling scuffs — light surface marks from buyers touching the box. Drop Surface by 0.5-1.
FAQ · funko pop shelf wear grading
Asked & answered.
Can I remove price sticker residue before grading?
Carefully. Use a sticker-residue lifter formulated for paper (Goo Gone Original is too aggressive — try Un-du or the eraser side of a kneaded eraser). Test on a hidden corner first. Submitting with residue still attached drops Surface by 1-2 points; submitting after a clean removal usually shows no deduction.
Is sun fade reversible on a Funko Pop box?
No — sun fade is permanent. UV light photo-bleaches the pigments in the printing. If your Pop's box has visible color fade, the overall grade caps at 9. Re-shoot under bright but not direct light to confirm it's not just photography.
Is Popinspect an official grader?
No. We are pre-grade intelligence — we predict what PSA, CGC, or Beckett are likely to grade your Pop. The official grade still comes from them. We just make sure you only ship the ones worth shipping.
